Map Streaming

Map Streaming

Map streaming allows you to view maps on-demand without downloading them first. Maps are loaded as you pan and zoom, requiring an active internet connection.

Enabling Map Streaming

You can enable or disable map streaming depending on your needs:

PC

Go to Settings > My Account and toggle Map Streaming on or off.

macOS

Go to Preferences > My Account and toggle Map Streaming on or off.

iOS and Android

Within Settings > Data, you can:

  • Enable or disable map streaming
  • Restrict map streaming to WiFi only (recommended to conserve mobile data)

When to Use Streaming vs Downloading

Use Streaming When:

  • You have a reliable internet connection
  • You're exploring new areas and aren't sure what maps you need
  • You want to save storage space on your device
  • You're planning at home before downloading for a trip

Use Downloads When:

  • You'll be in areas with poor or no signal
  • You need guaranteed access to maps
  • You want the fastest map loading performance
  • You're going into remote or mountainous terrain

Data Usage

Map streaming uses your internet data. On mobile devices with metered connections, consider:

  • Restricting streaming to WiFi only
  • Downloading maps you need before leaving home
  • Monitoring your data usage in your device settings
